Recipe Ingredients

- Green beans: Any variety of green bean will work, I usually use French or Haricot verts as they are commonly found in the grocery store.
- Bacon: A key ingredient for southern crockpot green beans! I prefer thick-cut bacon.
- Onion: Sweet onion adds so much flavor.
- Brown sugar: Adds a sweet taste that pairs well with the smokey and salty flavors.
- Garlic salt: Another savory ingredients that imparts flavor.
- Chicken broth: This flavors the beans as they cook and prevents them from drying out while cooking low and slow.
- Butter: For rich taste, butter is the way to go.
How to Make Green Beans in the Crockpot
Add fresh green beans, diced onions, brown sugar, 1/2 of the cooked bacon, garlic salt and chicken broth in base of crockpot. Season with salt, black pepper and top with butter.
Add lid and cook on high for 2-3 hours. Drain liquid if desired and top with remaining bacon and Parmesan cheese before serving.
Recipe Tips and Variations
- Place green beans facing same direction: This helps the green bean recipe to cook evenly. I like to pack them tightly in the slow cooker.
- Seasonings: Try smoked paprika, onion powder or lemon-pepper for some acidic taste that balances well with other flavors. Red pepper flakes would add some heat!
- Green beans: Use frozen green beans or canned green beans. Decrease cooking time for canned green beans.
- Add-ins: Add some diced red potatoes, ham or a ham hock.
- Vegetarian: To make crockpot green beans vegetarian, omit the bacon, use olive oil and use a vegetable broth.
- Garnish: Top with some additional bacon for crunch or Parmesan for a cheesy taste.
